Biography
Sunday A.P . Aghedo was born on the 25th of December, 1945 in Benin City at the palace of Enogie Ehigie Ovonranwen (The Royal Duke of Uwan, now Uwan Eweka Ugbogiobo) to the family of Joseph Enadoghe Aghedo (The Esasoyen of Benin Kingdom) and Princess Dada Rachael Aghedo (Nee Ojomo) of Ijebu Quarters in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State. His Father was the first U.A.C agent popularly referred to as “Oyibo UAC” in Ondo Province of former Western Region.
He started his education at Benin Baptist School, now Emokpae Primary School, Mission Road, Benin-City and proceeded to St. Patrick Model School, Airport Road, Benin-City, where he completed his primary education between 1951-1957. He attended Edo College for his secondary school education from 1959-1963. At Edo College, daddy was a lover of sports and took part in several sporting activities, including cricket and lawn tennis. He had a keen interest in cricket. During the Inter-House Sports Competition in 1959 at Edo College, he competed in the middle distance race of 800yards open miles and won a gold medal for Eweka House.
In January 1964, he proceeded to Government College, Ughelli for a two years A-Levels, after a competitive entrance examination in 1963. His close allies at Government College, Ughelli were Dr. Lawrence Imokhai and Commodore Joseph O. Ariri. Upon completion of his program in 1966, he got a direct entry admission into the University of Nigeria, Nsukka to study a three (3) years programme in Estate Management. His study was however interrupted when the then military Governor of Western Region had announced that the state could no longer guarantee the safety of Non-Igbos in the Eastern Region. General Yakubu Gowon, who was the military head of state had instructed that the students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka be absorbed into either the University of Ibadan, University of Lagos, University of Ife or Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. That year, he got into the University of Lagos, Akoka in 1966, where he studied Geography and graduated with a Bachelor Degree of Arts in Geography in 1970. At the University of Lagos, he was very active in student union politics, met friends and made great company, among whom were late Justice Muri Okunola, late Engr. Christopher E. Ogboro, Barr. Mustapha Abdullahi, IGP Adebayo Mustapha Balogun Rtd and Engr John Imoukhuome.
After his graduation from the University of Lagos he had a stint of lecturing at the Government Training School, GRA, Benin-City from 1971-1972, where he taught Library Studies. He was opportune to compile a syllabus for the training of confidential secretaries, stenographers and typist in the Public Service and Private Sector.
He was enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force on May 1st 1973, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police where he met his fellow course mates IGP Sunday Ehindero Rtd, IGP Tafa Balogun Rtd and they became close family friends over the years.
He served in various states of Nigeria. Among the states he served were:
1. Assistant Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command;
2. Deputy Commissioner of Police, Federal Headquarters, Kamsalem, Lagos;
3. Deputy Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command;
4. Commissioner of Police, Osun State Command;
5. Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command.
He was among the first few officers who held three major offices in same command, (Lagos State) as ACP, DCP, and CP.
He was later transferred to Benue State Police Command where he served from 1999-2001. As a result of meritorious service, he was promoted to the Rank of AIG, and then he was reposted as the pioneer AIG zone 9 Umuahia. He was a graduate of the Prestigious National War College, Abuja, Nigeria where he was awarded “Best Research Participant in Internal Security”. The next year, he was posted to Calabar Zone 6 until 2005, when he was reposted to Umuahia. Shortly after, he proceeded on his retirement leave. He won numerous awards in the Nigerian Police Force both nationally and internationally
